In His Majesty's Secret Service...The Society Of Shadow...

Rumored to be as old as Shendenflar itself, The Society of Shadow is a secret organization dedicated to the protection of the Kingdom and the restoration of balance throughout the Northern Flanaess. The Society currently includes 8 members but membership can exceed 100 in times of great crisis. Magic users governmental officials soldiers and guild masters have all served as members of the Society with the current membership a closely guarded secret.
The Society's main mission is to provide a "covert" response to threats against the Kingdom. It also acts as a far ranging intelligence gathering network for the Crown.

The City Of Riverhewn Capital Of The Kingdom Of Shendenflar

Riverhewn once a small settlement on the shore of Lake Quag has over the centuries become a huge sprawling city. Home to approximately 100,000 people. The city has steadily expanded over the Kingdom's existence. Serving as the seat of power for the Kingdom the massive complex known as Castle Shendenflar is located in Riverhewn.

The Kingdom Of Shendenflar and The Flanaess

The Kingdom Of Shendenflar sits at the Northern edge of the continent known as the Flanaess. While being fairly far north the Kingdom enjoys a mostly temperate climate with winter coming only slightly earlier and staying only slightly longer than in other locations on the continent. This map was created using GIMP and with the generous assistance of the members of the Cartographers Guild.

The Village Of Northrun

Located 5 miles north of the Capital city of Riverhewn lies the village of Northrun. It is nestled against the banks of the Fler river and uses the river to power the large sawmill that is the main source of income for the village. Raw logs felled in the Burneal and Heartwood forests are transported south on the Fler to Northrun, where they are milled and turned into usable lumber for the furniture makers and builders of Shendenflar. Northrun is a relatively quiet village with a small inn the "Laughing Dwarf" that is mostly used by bargemen travelling the Fler river. The "Singing Dragon" is the local watering hole and can be a rough place when the bargemen arrive in town. One area of note in Northrun is the "Nymph" a "festhall" that never seems to be open. noises can be heard coming from the building on certain nights and lights can be seen through cracks in the doors. No one is ever seen entering or leaving however. Residents of Northrun have grown accustomed to the mysterious building and pay it very little attention but will talk about it if asked.

Mariel's Bakery...

Located next to the Grinning Goblin tavern on "The Walk" in center Riverhewn is Mariel's Bakery. A small shop with a large work area in the back, Mariel's supplies some of the finest baked goods in the city. Her "sugarberry" pie has won numerous awards and is served in Riverhewn's finest establishments...

The Grinning Goblin Undergoes Expansion.

The Grinning Goblin or the "Goblin" as it is known in the Walk neighborhood it resides in. Is currently undergoing an expansion. Rog Nenshen owner announced today that as a present to his wife,he would add several new features to the popular establishment. Currently the tavern's kitchens are in the basement which forces Nenshen's wife and serving crew to walk up and down a narrow set of stairs repeatedly during the course of the day.The tavern is a popular dining spot with patrons from all over the city and especially with government officials given it's proximity to the Riverhewn City Office Building. The new expansion will feature a large kitchen with a above ground storage area, a new private room and a new restroom area. All in all a great "face-lift" for a worthy and popular local tavern.

Another look at the "Grinning Goblin"

As tavern's go, the "Goblin" isn't a five star kind of place. It is warm and reasonably clean as well as friendly. The Taverner Rog Nenshen probably gives away just as much food and drink as he sells but then he's not in it for the money. He's made all the gold any man could wish for over a long and successful adventuring career. Owing a tavern for Rog is more of a "hobby" a way to pass the days without too much hard work. Rog's wife Beila does most of the cooking for the tavern and the food is quite good. Many people will stop into the Goblin for a quick meal during the day even going out of their way to do so. Although Rog appreciates all his patrons he has a soft spot for adventurers. He will often give a party of adventurers free food and drink while they are in Riverhewn so that he can hear their stories and they can hear his. For this reason adventurers both rich and destitute can be found at the Grinning Goblin most days. For his part Rog will be found sitting at the end of the bar drink in hand either telling or being told a tale of great adventure.....

The Grinning Goblin (A Tavern)

The Grinning Goblin is a very special place for me. It has been the inspiration for many stories and quite a few adventures. Although it is a friendly place it is patronized by all member of folks causing the occasional fight or the not so occasional clandestine meeting which of course becomes overheard by some of the more "nosy" patrons which in turn becomes a rumor which in turn...well you get the idea. The taverner a tall newly overweight man named Rog Nenshen seems to be behind the bar almost all the time. He is an retired adventurer and the Goblin is his retirement dream. Born and raised in Riverhewn he is quite proud of his city and his tavern and loves to share a pint and a story..or three. The following is a work in progress illustration of the floor plan of the Grinning Goblin. Drawn in GIMP and also posted at The Cartographers Guild.

Welcome To The Kingdom Of Shendenflar

This blog will serve as a repository of all the various things that I have collected and created about the Kingdom Of Shendenflar a D+D Campaign setting. While I do not expect anyone to actually read any of this if you do and you enjoy it please let me know. I have spent the last 20 years of my life working on this project and am very proud of it. Over time I will post histories, legends, maps, characters, and general information about the Kingdom. I will in fact start with a map of the Kingdom with all of the major cities and smaller towns called out as well as the major geographical features of the Kingdom. This map was drawn with a program called GIMP which is free and a great image manipulation program that (in my opinion) rivals Photoshop. It is available:Here Also I must thank all the fine folks at the Cartographer's Guild a truly incredible forum of great people that are always willing to help a rookie digital map maker such as myself. If you are interested in Cartography whether it be fantasy or not, you owe it to yourself to visit this site.
